Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
